Last week, RiseBoro Community Partnership, sponsored a PowrServ event to assemble 450 hygiene kits that help people maintain basic hygiene and thus prevent spread of disease or illness. PowrServ assembles hygiene kits with churches, schools, companies and organizations across the United States. Each kit is distributed by Heart to Heart International, which strives to strengthen communities through improving health access, providing humanitarian development and administering crisis relief worldwide.
RiseBoro staff from IT and Finance departments took a few hours of their day on October 20th to participate in a team-building exercise assembling over 450 hygiene kits for the homeless veterans of the RiseBoro Community Empowerment Center's (CEC) Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. The hygiene kits included essential items to stay clean: toothpaste, toothbrush, band aids, nail clippers, washcloth, soap, comb, hand towel, and shampoo. After assembling and packing up the kits into boxes, the team walked over to 90 Beaver Street, where the SSVF program is housed, to drop off the kit boxes and learn more about the advocacy and services of the CEC. The team took a tour of the building's offices and listened to a presentation on CEC programs with the help of SSVF Program Director Oliver Llewellyn and Communications Associate Gabrielle Acierno.
The event was a tremendous success, not only in fostering team-building among RiseBoro staff, but also by reminding RiseBoro's IT and finance staff that the work they do behind the scenes contributes to the well-being and empowerment of thousands of community residents who are in crisis. Laurel Garron, assistant to RSBCC's CFO and co-coordinator of the event said "we are sending people back to work with a new perspective." Participants agreed the event was both enjoyable and fulfilling. "It was a lot of fun," said Rosie, "It gives us the opportunity to work together for something really good. We should all appreciate that others are in need and be grateful. It's good for all of us to understand what RiseBoro does." Novelette added, "being in finance, we are somewhat removed from the larger RiseBoro mission, so today was really impactful to be coming from the background to do something directly for people."
"We engage volunteers, collaborate with partners and deploy resources to achieve this mission. Together, we can change lives. One simple kit at a time!"
