Beacon/Advantage Program at I.S. 562

Funded by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (NYC DYCD) and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.
For students between the ages of 6 and 13, teens, and adults.

School Year Hours

Students Ages 6 - 13: Monday to Friday, 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm
Teens and Adults: Monday to Friday from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm 
All are welcome on Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

Summer Camp Hours

In July and August, Monday to Friday, 8:00 am – 6:00 pm

Services

The Beacon/Advantage program provides a wide variety of academic, creative, social-emotional, and recreational activities for the young people we serve. Elementary school aged youth focus on homework assistance and recreational activities. Middle school participants make their own schedules, choosing from a wide variety of project-based literacy, STEM, and arts activities, (including Drama, Sports Journalism, Song Writing, Music Production, Computer Animation, Science Club, and many more), as well as several physical activities (Martial Arts, Dance, Sports, Fitness, Gym and Yoga). All participants also take part in community service projects, Showcase performances, and field trips throughout the year. Recreational programming is offered to high school youth and adults during the evening hours.

Services

This comprehensive after-school program incorporates positive youth development principles such as ensuring the safety and health of our youth, providing adult role models, empowering youth, integrating the family school and community, and offering opportunities for youth to develop individual skills and competencies. Activities offered include academic instruction, STEM, workshops, individual and group counseling, recreation, theatre arts, music, homework assistance and tutoring.

Summer Camp

The Compass summer camp provides educational, recreational and cultural enrichment.
